Road Line-marking Evaluation - Victoria

The Challenge

Innovative photoluminescent road line markings had been installed at select locations across Victoria, but there was no reliable method to evaluate their real-world effectiveness. Traditional observation methods could not objectively measure whether the enhanced markings changed driver behaviour, lane positioning, or safety outcomes.

Our Solution

Real Time Traffic deployed NearMiss cameras at locations with photoluminescent line markings to capture and analyse vehicle lane positioning, speed profiles, and driver behaviour both before and after installation, providing objective evaluation of marking effectiveness.

Implementation Details:

  • NearMiss camera deployment at photoluminescent marking locations
  • Before-and-after vehicle lane position analysis
  • Speed profile comparison across treatment sites
  • Day vs night behaviour change analysis
  • Statistical evaluation of marking effectiveness

Results

Vehicle lane positioning changes documented pre and post treatment
Speed profile variations captured at marking locations
Day and night behavioural differences quantified
Objective effectiveness metrics generated for each location

Long-term Impact

Provided road authorities with objective, data-driven evidence on the effectiveness of photoluminescent road markings to inform future infrastructure investment decisions
