ROSIICAM Stage 1 - Regional Road Safety

The Challenge

Regional and remote roads across New South Wales experience disproportionately high crash rates, yet the factors contributing to these crashes are poorly understood due to limited monitoring infrastructure. Transport for NSW needed a scalable method to assess road safety risks across dispersed regional locations.

Our Solution

Real Time Traffic deployed NearMiss cameras as part of the ROSIICAM Stage 1 program across regional NSW locations to capture and analyse near-miss events, vehicle behaviour, and road user interactions. The program established a baseline understanding of safety risks at priority regional locations.

Implementation Details:

  • NearMiss camera deployment across priority regional locations
  • Near-miss event detection and classification
  • Vehicle speed, volume, and classification monitoring
  • Road user interaction analysis at key risk points
  • Baseline safety data collection for future comparison

Current/Completed Deployment Sites:

  • Almond and Picton Road
  • School Crossings Near Bidwill and Brookvale Public Schools
  • Valla Beach Road
  • Enmore Rd & King St, Newtown NSW
  • Elizabeth Street and Foveaux Street, Surry Hills
  • Mount Ousley Road/Princes Motorway NSW

Results

Near-miss events captured and analysed across regional locations
Vehicle behaviour patterns documented at priority sites
Risk factors identified for targeted intervention planning
Baseline safety dataset established for ongoing monitoring

Long-term Impact

Established a foundational safety dataset for regional NSW roads, enabling Transport for NSW to prioritise safety investments based on actual risk data rather than crash history alone
