Smart Work Zone Monitoring – Level Crossing Removal Project
Client: Level Crossing Removal Project (VIDA)

The Challenge
The Level Crossing Removal Project (VIDA) required real-time hazard detection and immediate notification systems to minimise high-risk interactions between workers and vehicles at construction sites, while also enhancing safety at construction site crossings.
Our Solution
Real Time Traffic deployed an integrated solution combining Realite Safety Cameras with edge computing for sub-second hazard detection (Worker Alert POC) and cloud-based processing for vehicle crossing alerts. The system includes wearable LED technology and flashing LED warning lights for immediate notifications.
Implementation Details:
- Worker Alert POC: 1 site with 8 cameras in Pakenham, Victoria
- Vehicle Crossing Alert: 1 site with 4 cameras
- Integrated Jetson edge computing devices for sub-second processing
- LED-equipped hard hats for visual worker notifications
- Cloud-based vehicle detection with alert activation
- Flashing LED warning lights at strategic crossing points
Results
Long-term Impact
The Worker Alert system's sub-second processing speed, achieved through edge computing, provided immediate feedback to workers entering danger zones. The Vehicle Crossing Alert system's optimised 4-second delay provided sufficient time for workers and drivers to respond before vehicles reached crossings. Both systems demonstrated the capacity for effective detection and alert delivery, enhancing construction site safety for the Level Crossing Removal Project.
