Yarra Speed Trial Evaluation

Client: City of Yarra

Yarra Speed Trial Evaluation

The Challenge

The City of Yarra implemented a 30km/h speed limit trial across selected streets to improve pedestrian and cyclist safety. Comprehensive evaluation was needed to measure the trial's impact on actual vehicle speeds, traffic volumes, and road user behaviour to determine whether the speed reduction achieved its safety objectives.

Our Solution

Real Time Traffic deployed NearMiss and survey technology to conduct a comprehensive before-and-after evaluation of the 30km/h speed trial. The system captured vehicle speeds, volumes, classifications, and interactions with pedestrians and cyclists to provide a complete picture of the trial's effectiveness.

Implementation Details:

  • NearMiss and survey camera deployment across trial streets
  • Before-and-after speed profile analysis
  • Vehicle volume and classification monitoring
  • Pedestrian and cyclist interaction analysis
  • Compliance rate measurement and trend tracking

Results

Vehicle speed profiles documented pre and post implementation
Traffic volume and composition changes captured
Pedestrian and cyclist interaction patterns analysed
Speed compliance rates measured across trial zones

Long-term Impact

Delivered comprehensive evaluation data enabling the City of Yarra to make informed decisions about permanent speed limit changes based on measured safety outcomes
